HISTORICAL SKETCH
Rev. John L. Zaplotnik (1883-1978), a Catholic priest and missionary among Slovene Americans, came to the United States in 1902, studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained in 1908 by Archbishop John Ireland. Father Zaplotnik served parishes in Nebraska and Wyoming. In the 1920s, he received a Doctor of Canon Law degree from the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He wrote biographies of Slovenian priests in the United States and a biography of the missionary Janez Cebul, as well as a book on canon law. Rev. Zaplotnik was also a founder, in 1917, of the St. Peter and Paul Parish in Omaha, Nebraska.
