HISTORICAL SKETCH

Humanitarian aid organization "Humanitas" was founded in 1954. "Humanitas" was a federation of: (A) the free leaders and members of the Estonian and Lithuanian Red Cross Societies, (B) free leaders and members of the former non-communist Red Cross societies of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Rumania, (C) and the associations by the persons mentioned under paragraph (B) for the assistance of their respective compatriots and other associations. The general aims of "Humanitas" were: to encourage and facilitate all forms of activity for the relief of the refugees, exiles and stateless persons from the Baltic states, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Rumania; to receive complaints and to gather proof and data regarding infringement on human rights and human rights conventions etc.

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2010. Margit Laanemets and Kristel Tammik of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
