HISTORICAL SKETCH

14.01.1897 - 26.05.1965 Goslar, Germany Born in Kudina, Tartumaa, Estonia. Wife: Anna-Marie Soodla (nee Kuusik 1899-1937, married in 1922, Tartu); wife: Irene-Erika Soodla (nee Heimberg 1904, married in 1939, Paris, France). Participated in the Estonian War of Independence, received awards (Vabadusrist II/2, II/3, Kotkaristid, Karutapja). Studied at the University of Tartu, faculty of law. Graduated Estonian Military Academy in 1927. Studied at Military Academy of France 1939. Chief of Estonian Military Academy 1939-1940. 1946-1947 in prison camp in British zone (Germany), 1951-1959 lived in Trieste (Italy), from 1959 moved to the USA and returned to Germany couple of years later

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2009. Gristel Ramler and Birgit Nurme of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
