HISTORICAL SKETCH

Voldemar Vaher was born on 29.07.1923 in parish Vao, Virumaa, Estonia and died on 09.05.2001 in Elmhurst, New York, USA. He studied at Gymnasium in Väike-Maarja, which he graduated in 1942. He continued studies at University of Tartu faculty of agriculture, but he didn’t graduate because of the German mobilization. In Giessen (Germany) he graduated Justus-Liebig-Universitaet in 1948 (agronomy). 1950 he emigrated to USA. He graduated with MA in 1952 Cornell University (Ithaca, New York, US A). He worked in DP camp Warner Barracks American Library as director (München, Germany); Dairymen’s League Coop; Cornell University as assistant; Grandview Dairy as head of the Laboratory; Queens Farms Milk as quality control manager. Social activities: EELC New York congregation (council member for 30 years); Eesti Abistamise Komitee=Estonian Relief Committee (vice-president, president); Estonian Bridge Club (chairman); Eesti Rahvuskomitee Ühendriikides=Estonian American National Council (chairman); Eesti Skaudi- ja Gaidisõprade Seltside Liit=Estonian Boy and Girl Scout Support Societies Union (board member, vice-president, chairman); Eesti Spordiliit USA's=Estonian Sports Union of the USA (board member); corp. Sakala (member); Estonian Educational Society of New York (board member, vice-chairman for 18 years, chairman 1982-1993 and honorary member); Nordic Press (board member); New Yorgi Eesti Skaudi- ja Gaidisõprade Selts =Estonian Boy and Girl Scout Support Society of New York (chairman since 1969). Voldemar Vaher was acknowledged with the II class of the North Star. He married in 1955 to Virve Vaher (maiden name Lepik), they had two sons Elmar and Paul and daughter Silvia. V.Vaher had brother Ülo.

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Valjas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
