Biographical / Historical

(Salme Lott Neumann)October 16, 1911 (Kahala, Kabala parish, Estonia) – September 29, 1994 (Carlisle, PA USA). Went to school in Viljandi (Viljandi Eesti Haridusselts). Studied singing under J. Rosen and dancing under I. Urbel and G. Neggo. Worked at Ugala theater in Viljandi (1932-1933), Endla theater in Pärnu (1933-1934) and Estonia theater in Tallinn (1934-1944). Fled to Germany in 1944, where she was assigned to a camp in Geislingen, Würtemberg. Performed at Geislingen Estonian National Theater. Emigrated to the US in 1949. Worked for Citibank for many years. Member of Association of Professional Actors of Estonia (Eesti Näitlejate Liit); founding member, actor and director of New York Estonian Theater.

Processing Information

Collection was processed and described as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC Archives in September 2016. Pille Aguraiuja and Külli Niidassoo of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRCA staff on the project.
