Biographical / Historical

The Minnesota Friends of Cyprus [MFC] was founded in 1974 as a reorganization of the Minnesota Cyprus Committee [MCC].  Its purposes are related to the Cyprus problem: to contribute to its just solution, to provide information to the American public and its governmental officals, and to aid refugees.  The organization lobbied directly with the U.S. government to end arms support for Turkey through personal meetings as well as a letter and mailgram campaign. It held public discussions and other events, including lectures, film screenings, seminars and conferences focusing on the Cyprus situation, Greek and Cypriot culture and human rights. Furthermore, the MFC published a newsletter from 1977 to 1979. Members have participated in regional, national, and international events, including the 1975 Women Walk Home (Cyprus).  Fundraising events, such as local concerts, dinners, the sale of handicrafts created by refugees, supported direct relief. As of 1987, the MFC was inactive but still extant.

Papers in this collection are organized into the following series: Organizational Papers and Financial Records; Correspondence; Print and Near-Print Materials (MFC); Print and Near-Print Materials (Other Sources); Newspaper Clippings; Maps, Posters and Ephemera; and Photographs. Materials are primarily in English, with a small number (mostly among newspaper clippings) in Greek. The Print and Near-Print Materials (Other Sources) represent a large MFC file of materials received from over seventy-five outside organizations, of which most displayed either a Greek American affilation or a human-rights orientation.
