HISTORY OF THE BEDFORD YMCA

Organized in the Bedford neighborhood of Brooklyn during the winter of 1888/89, this branch took over the work of the ineffective “Young Men’s Union.” By October of 1890 the branch had secured its first property at 420 Gates Avenue and Edward H. Foot was chosen as the first executive secretary.

As membership in the branch grew at rapid rate, plans for a new building began in 1901. In 1905 a new building opened at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Monroe Street. A 1919 annex to the building allowed the Bedford Branch to offer better facilities for its trade school, offering courses in automobile repair, aviation, and more. These trade school courses were a major part of the branch’s programming through the 1970s. Tuition and fees paid by students helped to supplement not only the class instruction, but other YMCA programs as well. The branch continues today as the Bedford-Stuyvesant Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York.
