HISTORY OF EASTERN DISTRICT YMCA
Officially organized in 1889, the seeds of the Eastern District Branch were first planted the previous year when a group of ten men met in the chapel of the Ross Street Church to propose the founding of a Young Men’s Christian Association.
In later years, the Eastern District Branch had a reputation for emphasizing the religious aspects of the Y’s programs. A 1927 survey noted the Eastern District Branch united “religious fervor with real religious tolerance.”
In the 1970s, the Williamsburg neighborhood, home to the branch, underwent a major demographic shift, with Hispanics and Hasidic Jews becoming the major population groups. Declining membership as a result of these shifts caused the branch to partner with the New York City Housing Authority to offer programs from the community center of the Borinquen Plaza Houses. The branch merged with the Twelve Towns Branch in early 1990s.
