HISTORY OF FLATBUSH YMCA
Organized by members of the Flatbush community in Brooklyn in 1924, the Flatbush YMCA originally opened in the midst of a population area of 250,000—one of the great residential areas of the city. The original building was located in the historic Clarkson mansion at the corner of Church Avenue and Kenmore Place. After a fire destroyed the building in 1940, the branch has been in several locations, including a renovated theater.
The branch offered traditional YMCA programs with much of the effort focused on youth and athletics. Major offerings included the Flatbush Youth Services Center and a Day Camp. The branch continues to operate to this day.
