HISTORY OF THE YMCA GENERAL COUNSEL
While the collection contains files on legal matters dating back to the late nineteenth century, the YMCA's coordinating body in the United States did not establish an office of general counsel for the organization until the mid-1970s. During that decade, the movement began investing more resources in legislative and regulatory matters affecting YMCAs and in providing assitance in obtaining public funding for programs. In addition, it faced a rise in legal problems, including tax matters, damage suites, and trademark infringment cases, among others. During this period, a reorganization of the Board's national headquarters was completed that included the establishement of an internal General Counsel.
