HISTORY OF NEW UTRECHT YMCA

The New Utrecht YMCA was founded in 1869 as part of the Brooklyn Association, although it did not continue as part of the Brooklyn YMCA more than a few years and apparently ceased operations by 1900. In November of 1919, a reorganized branch opened at 1841 Eighty-fourth Street with a dormitory; a gymnasium was constructed in 1925. The Brooklyn Association intended that the branch would share its facilities with area churches for leadership training and activities, and the new branch membership included some men who had been associated with the former 1869 branch. New Utrecht closed its doors in 1953.
