BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM A. MARKELL

William A. Markell began his long career with the YMCA in the 1940s, serving as physical director and executive director at various branches in Cleveland, Ohio. Born in 1922 in Kirkland, Ohio, he graduated from Fenn College (which later became part of Cleveland State University) before entering YMCA service. He worked at YMCA branches in Dayton, Akron and New York City and was managing director in San Francisco before returning to New York as president of the YMCA of Greater New York in 1982. He retired in 1990 and died in November 2015 in Bradenton, Florida.
