SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

The collection consists entirely of correspondence received by Henry M. Orne from before he became general secretary (1896) until after he replaced McBurney as general secretary (1899-1912). Topics covered include the YMCA-owned yacht Amazon, the Railroad branch, the Silver Bay Associaiton, the gifts of Mrs. A.D. Juilliard to the West Side branch, and taxes and finance. Correspondents include: other New York City YMCA branches, the national and international offices of the organization, state and federal government agencies, James Stokes, Edwin F. See, H.P. Vorhees, William Fellowes Morgan, and C.H. Dodge.

BIOGRAPHY OF HENRY M. ORNE

Henry M. Orne began his association with the YMCA of the City of New York as a member in the 1870s, serving on the Invitation Committee of the 23rd Street branch (later renamed the McBurney branch) in 1879. In the 1880s, he was an editor of Association Notes for New York City and was listed as a member of the Reception Committee and Membership Committee at the 23rd Street branch. He began paid employment at the New York City Y in the 1890s, and was listed as associate secretary of the 23rd Street branch in 1890. After Robert McBurney's death in 1898, Orne became general secretary. He continued in that role through World War I, when he became comptroller, a position he held until 1924.
