SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The James W. McCandless papers consists of daily record books, scrapbooks, pamphlets, booklets, reports, and photographs documenting James McCandless's life and career as a YMCA secretary in Minneapolis, Dayton, and Los Angeles from 1911 to 1946. Two files contain material related to James McCandless's son Wilbur McCandless—a YMCA secretary in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1938 to 1942.

BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES W. McCANDLESS
James W. McCandless was born in Dayton, Ohio on December 11, 1884.
He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1908. From 1908 to 1911 he taught English, public speaking, and journalism at Carleton College. He began his professional YMCA career in 1911 as the educational director of the Minneapolis YMCA. From 1916 to 1925, he was the Executive Secretary of the Central Branch of the Minneapolis YMCA. In 1925, he joined the staff of the National Council as a Senior Secretary in the Program, Research and Survey Section. He left the staff of the National Council in 1934 to become the General Secretary of the Dayton YMCA. From 1939 until his retirement in 1946 he was the General Secretary of the Los Angeles YMCA.
He died on July 16, 1956.
