Historical Note

University Grove was platted about 1928 as a residential area for University of Minnesota staff and faculty and is located in Falcon Heights. The Grove, as it has come to be called, was University-owned land that was subdivided into approximately 100 parcels. Staff and faculty who chose to build in University Grove could obtain a parcel on a 99-year lease and build, at their expense, a house on their parcel. Over the years, beginning in 1928, the Grove has been almost entirely built up, with houses designed by a number of well-known Twin Cities architects including Ralph Rapson, Elizabeth and Winston Close, James Stageberg, Michael McGuire, Edwin Lundie, Rollin Chapin, William Ingemann, Larson & McLaren, Long & Thorshov, Hammel & Green, Liebenberg & Kaplan, Thorshov & Cerny, Joseph Michels, and Brooks Cavin.
