The Minnesota Society of Architects functions as the state organization of the American Institute of Architects professional association. It was formed in 1934 out of local AIA chapters, including the Minneapolis and St. Paul AIA Chapters and the Northeast Minnesota Chapter. It is a non-profit organization that links the national AIA and the local membership, acts as a lobbyist on behalf of the architecture profession, and as a catalyst in increasing public awareness of architecture, of architects' services, and of the built environment. In 1977, the society changed its name to Minnesota Society American Institute of Architects, and in 1992 changed its name to AIA Minnesota.
