Historical Note

VocalEssence is a Minneapolis-based choral organization, founded in 1969 by Philip Brunelle as a community music program of Plymouth Congregational Church named Plymouth Music Series. The organization changed its name to VocalEssence in 2002.

It has been the lifelong mission of artistic director Brunelle to promote the choral arts through rarely heard works of the past and adventurous music of the present. VocalEssence has grown into one of the world’s premier choral music organizations, and has focused on strengthening the local community in Minnesota through a variety of choral music programming, including performing ensembles, school curricula, elder learning initiatives, and advocacy projects.
