James Sewell Ballet was founded in New York City by Minneapolis native James Sewell and Sally Rouse and brought to Minnesota in 1992. The James Sewell Ballet is known for consistently pushing the technical and artistic boundaries of ballet.
The troupe of eight core dancers has worked with the Minnesota Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, VocalEssence, Dale Warland Singers, Children's Theatre Company, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota Dance Theatre, and Ballet Arts Minnesota. The dancers have performed in nearly 50 Minnesota communities, 28 states, as well as internationally.

The collection contains corporate records, including board minutes and fundraising information, performance data, publicity and marketing materials, photographs and promotional materials.
The records were donated to the Performing Arts Archives beginning in 2005, with accruals added at an infrequent rate.
Additions to the Records will be donated on an annual basis as possible.
The collection was processed by Archives student assistants and the finding aid written by Barbara Bezat.
