The Minnesota Opera was founded in 1963 as the Center Opera Company of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company operated as a branch of the Walker Art Center's performing arts division until they spun-off as a sperate company in 1969. The company continued to operate under the name Center Opera until a name change to Minnesota Opera in 1972. In 1976 the company merged with the St. Paul Opera and, in the mid-1980s, began regularly performing out of the Ordway Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The opera company continues to produce new and tarditional operatice repertoire in the Ordway.
