Safira (Oksanen) Kallio was born in Finland on April 12, 1894 and emigrated to the United States in 1913. She served as a local correspondent from Owen, Wisconsin for the Finnish American newspaper "Minnesotan Uutiset" (later, "Amerikan Uutiset"). Much of her poetry was published in the newspaper.

Included are also photographs and five cassette tapes containing the recorded interviews. The histories describe life in Finland before emigration, accounts of the journey across the Atlantic and resettlement in the eastern states of the U.S.
