Dwight Reed was born in St. Paul Minnesota in the late 1910s. He attended the University of Minnesota and was an All-American defensive end for the Golden Gophers football team under Coach Bernie Bierman from 1935-1938. Reed was one of only two African-American players on the team at this time. During World War II Reed was a sergeant in the US Army based at Fort Knox, Kentucky, a racially integrated unit.
